Ian Adams Therapy Services, PLLC

What if you didn't have to become someone else to feel okay?

I want to know all of you, especially the parts you think are weird.

Hi, I'm Ian.
I'm a Mental Health Counselor and Existential Psychotherapist, and I believe that you can be yourself in the room.

You don't have to have the right words. You don't have to make your life sound more put-together than it is. And you definitely don't have to hide the parts of yourself that you worry someone else might judge.

During my time as a therapist, one of the things I've come to appreciate most about this work is how much there is to learn when someone feels comfortable enough to be completely honest. I've had clients talk with me about identities, relationships, interests, communities, subcultures, and parts of themselves that they've never felt comfortable bringing up with anyone else, including past therapists. Those conversations don't scare me or make me uncomfortable, I look forward to them! You might be surprised with how much I already know about your interest - who knows, it might be my interest too.

If something is important to you, it should be important to your therapist.

My Therapeutic Approach

My approach is grounded in Existential Psychotherapy.

Underlying our work, I frequently find clients asking:

  • Who am I?

  • What do I actually want?

  • How do I live a meaningful life?

  • What am I here for?

However, Therapy isn't a philosophy lecture. Sometimes we talk about meaning and mortality; sometimes we talk about anxiety, relationships, trauma, executive functioning, or why you absolutely cannot make yourself answer that one email.

I draw from a variety of approaches, including Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and EMDR, depending on what fits you and what we're working on. I don't believe in forcing everyone into the same therapeutic box. I'm especially comfortable working with people who have felt like they don't quite fit the mold, including people in LGBTQIA+ communities and alternative subcultures.

You don't need to convince me that your identity, relationships, interests, or way of living are legitimate before we can work together. At the same time, you don't need to be "alternative" in any way to be welcome here. Anxiety, depression, relationships, life transitions, self-esteem, trauma, existential questions, and simply feeling stuck are more than enough reasons to reach out.

Outside of therapy, I'm usually surrounded by plants, books, coffee, music, games, philosophy, or some combination of all five. I'm a bit of a nerd, a little weird, and probably more relaxed than you might expect from someone who chose existential psychotherapy as a career. Click the more about me tab at the top of the screen to learn more.

My goal isn't to tell you who you should become. It's to help you understand yourself well enough to decide for yourself.
